Abortion

By: Stephen Kingery

"And for the next four and a half hours, I felt my son thrash around violently while he was being choked, poisoned, burned and suffocated to death. I didn't know any of that was going to happen. And I remember talking to him and I remember telling him I didn't want to do this, and I wished he could live and that his mommy loved him and that I was sorry. I prayed that he understood and that someday, he would learn to forgive me, if he could! And yet he was dying and there was nothing I could do to save him. I remember my son's very last kick. He had no strength left to fight." (From a letter by the Ohio Right To Life Society)

The thoughts of a mother as she experiences the brutal and gruesome saline abortion of her son can only begin to show the agony of abortion. This mother was having second thoughts, but she was helpless to stop the killing. The anguish she must have felt was tremendous. But can you imagine the pain that her son was going through? He was literally being scalded to death. This letter from the Ohio Right To Life Society continues, "In a saline abortion, a concentrated salt solution is injected into the sac of fluid that surrounds and protects the baby. The mother can feel the baby thrash about for hours as the corrosive salt poisons and burns the baby alive, inside and out. The mother actually goes into labor and delivers a dead or dying baby."

In America today we, as Christians, wring our hands and shake our heads and agonize over the violence we see on television, on our streets and in our schools. Yet, the violence in these places is NOTHING compared to the violence that goes on day after day in the hundreds of abortion clinics all across America. You and I have not only accepted this violence as a way of life (or death for the baby) but we sit idly by and watch the President of the United States FIGHT to make abortion available to everyone (including children) and to be paid for and supported by the tax dollars WE send to Washington.

Is it any wonder that so many people in our nation consider life to be cheap. Why would we expect that the life of a teacher who is shot and killed in her classroom to be more valuable than that of a helpless baby in the "safety" of his mother's womb. Why is it a crime for a person to shoot and kill an abortionist as he leaves his abortion clinic and not a crime for that abortionist to kill eight, ten or more helpless babies each day? Was his life MORE VALUABLE than the babies that he killed that day? Now please don't misunderstand me! I do not advocate killing anyone — abortionists included. I simply do not see why we can accept that it IS a crime to kill a person who is an adult and NOT a crime to kill a person just because that person has not had an opportunity to grow in his or her mother's womb to the point that he or she can be born. If one is a crime, then the other is as well!

The thing that amazes me the most is that this crime of abortion has been legalized in America and WE have just accepted it. America is supposed to be a Christian nation. Now I know we are tolerant of other religious beliefs, and I fully support that. Nonetheless, this nation was founded on Christian principles and we have been proud of that fact for over 200 years. But killing innocent unborn babies by the millions is not a Christian principle and WE should not sit idly by and watch it happen.

Before you start talking to yourself and saying, "Oh I know it happens in America, but it can't be that bad.", let me give you some statistics which were provided to me by the Ohio Right To Life Society.

Abortions in the United States

* Over 4,300 abortions performed daily
* Over 1,600,000 abortions performed in 1988
* 6,749 teenagers under 15 had abortions in 1989
* 196,112 teenagers 15-19 had abortions in 1989
* Over 28 million abortions from 1973 to 1991
* From 744,600 in 1973 to 1,600,000 in 1991

It's not that bad? EXACTLY how many innocent babies do we have to have killed each year before we Christians will say, "Ok, now it's bad." How many innocent babies must die before we will start saying to our congressmen, senators and presidents "Look, I don't care what your politics are, I WILL NOT VOTE FOR YOU if you support legal abortions!" If the Christians in the country would stand united, abortion would become a crime (as it should) in very short order.

The abortion issue is not the only indication that things have gone awry in America. Below are other statistics provided by the Ohio Right To Life Society which show the alarming rise in all sorts of evil.

Percent of increase from 1950 to 1988

* Homicide 243%
* Suicide 100%
* Abortion 800%
* Abortion (under age 20) 760%
* Euthanized Patients 1,200%
* Births out of wedlock 426%
* Rape 230%
* Divorce 212%
* Child Abuse Cases 2,317%
* Robbery 71%
* * SAT Scores -8% (Notice that this is a decline!!)

These statistics should speak for themselves. Our nation — which should be "One Nation Under God" — is experiencing a steady decline in our Christian values. And now our President is trying hard to get the Congress to agree to fund abortions out of federal tax dollars. If he succeeds, look for these numbers (except SAT Scores) to go even higher. If the Congress of the United States takes that kind of a stand to emphasize that LIFE IS CHEAP, all life (not just the unborn) will also become even MORE CHEAP.

But what does the Bible say about abortion? Actually, the Bible does not say anything about abortion by that name. However, the idea is there in Exodus 21:22-24; "If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no lasting harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman's husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any lasting harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe." Brother George Faull says this about this passage; "Scholars have believed that if a man (even by accident) caused an early birth, he was fined. If the child or mother died, he was to die. This is the interpretation of the passage by not only modern Christian commentators such as Clark, Delitzsch, but also modern Jewish scholars, and the ancient Jewish Talmud. The second century Christians also held this position on Ex. 21."

Brother Faull goes on to say that the following Scriptures show that the fetus is a person and has a spirit before birth:

"Why then have You brought me out of the womb? Oh, that I had perished and no eye had seen me!" (Job 10:18)

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; And I ordained you a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5)

"So the woman came and told her husband, saying, ‘A Man of God came to me, and His countenance was like the countenance of the Angel of God, very awesome; but I did not ask Him where He was from, and He did not tell me His name. And he said to me, "Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. Now drink no wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death."'"
(Judges 13:6-7)

"For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy" (Luke 1:44)

Even though the Bible clearly indicates that a person is a person at conception, I think that it is truly a shame that we have to go to the Bible to PROVE that abortion is wrong. What of our Christian principles have we lost that makes us accept abortion? Have we lost our understanding of God's Word that all human life is precious? Have we lost our love for God and our fellow man? Have we lost our knowledge that God is our Creator and He gave us the ability to procreate according to His will?

The Christians in America are facing a great temptation or test. This test is: Are we going to allow abortion to continue to grow in America and become funded by our tax dollars? Or will be start today to write our congressmen and the President and tell them that we are opposed to abortion and will NOT support them in future elections REGARDLESS of their political affiliation? The choice is with each one of us that claim the name of Christ and love Him as our Lord and Savior. Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep My commandments." (John 14:15) To me, keeping His commandments is much more than just writing down a list of do's and don't's and making some feeble attempt to follow them. We must take a stand against all kinds of evil. Brothers and sisters, ABORTION IS EVIL!!!
