Old World Perishes In Flood
By: Paul Griffitts
Young Christians in the world today are bombarded with all types of "scientific proofs” that "prove" that the biblical record is just a collection of stories or myths and could not possibly be true. Many believe that no Bible doctrine ought to be taught in our schools today but only science be offered even though our forefathers believed that the Bible should be the first book in the last book out of any educational institution. Today the ones that would stop all biblical teachings quote a separation of church and state as being the valid argument that no Bible teaching should be brought within our halls of education not understanding that those words are not contained within the Constitution and our forefathers simply wanted to prevent any state recognized or official religion. I believe that the theory of evolution is actually much more a religion than any accurate Bible teaching for there are many religions and many theories but there is only one Truth.
The student today is faced with many dilemmas in that science proves that the age of the universe goes back billions of years and yet Christians today still for the most part wrongly teach that the Bible speaks of the world being created in six days about 6000 years ago. This is simply not what the Bible teaches even though it does tell us that Adam was made, formed and created about 6000 years ago. Let’s take a look at Genesis and see what the Bible really teaches:
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Here in the first chapter in the first verse of the Bible, God instructs us that He created the heaven and the earth but it does not tell us how long this took nor does it say that the work was not completed. The word created is an interesting word, it is the Hebrew word bara and it means to create or to now have something where there was nothing. So the Bible instructs us that where before there was nothing now there is heaven and earth. Then God’s Word says:
Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
There are many things about Genesis chapter 1 that should have arrested our attention immediately. First is the word was for in the Hebrew there is no verb “to be” and the importance of this can be shown if we turn to Isaiah 45:18.
Isaiah 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
God says he did not create the heaven and the earth in vain but formed them to be inhabited yet in Genesis chapter 1 verse 2 God tells us the earth was without form and void. These words in the Hebrew language are tohu and bahu and are always translated nought, vain, vanity, waste, wilderness, ruin, emptiness, void. In Isaiah 45:18 these words are translated vain and we see that God did not create in vain He created with the design for them to be inhabited. If He did not create the heaven and earth in vain but formed them to be inhabited then the word was is a bad translation when used in Genesis 1:2. The word translated was in Genesis 1:2 is the Hebrew word hayah and means became which would be the correct translation. So the world was not without form and void or in vain waste it became that way and then God set out to re-establish it. In all the following verses the Bible does not say God created (bara)but that He said (amar) or commanded and it was so and it was good. The reason for this is because things needed to be brought back together and their components were already in existence having been created earlier they were now in disarray or chaos and so God set about to re-establish them which took six days. From this work He rested on the seventh. We have another reference to this in the New Testament its in 2 Peter:
2 Peter 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 2 Peter 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
Some will say this is talking about the flood but that is not what the Word of God says for the world then did not perish but the waters receded. If the truth of God’s Word was taught in our schools today than all would fit, science and Scripture, for dinosaur bones, ancient geology and astrophysics all which say the world is billions of years old would agree in perfect harmony as they must with the wonderful Word of God.
