The Republic of Chile is a South American country wedged between the mountains of the Andes, and the Pacific Ocean, and includes Easter Island in the Central Pacific. Great extremes of climate are experienced, from the hot Atacama Desert to the Antarctic tundra.

Chile's democratic government is cautiously seeking to rectify the damage to health and education, and heal the deep divisions in society brought about by earlier regimes. Just grievances and fears of those involved must be faced. Military dictatorships have divided the church - both Catholic and Protestant. Missionary movement has not developed as much as it could, because of geographical isolation, political upheaval and lack of exposure.
