Colombia
For more information see the Colombia profile.
Colombia is a troubled land in the northwest corner of South America.
Notorious for the flourishing cocaine smuggling industry, Colombia has
gained a reputation as perhaps the most violent country on earth. Major
legal products are oil and coffee. Ever since independence from Spain in
1821, Colombia has suffered the ill effects of bitter, and often violent,
partisan politics. In the 1980's Colombia's government began efforts to curb
the drug trade. The powerful drug cartels violently resisted and initiated
a campaign of terror as bombings, assassinations, and kidnaping became
common. Although evangelicals and other religious minorities were long
persecuted, Colombia now has religious freedom, and evangelical congregations
enjoy spectacular growth.
