Ecuador is a South American nation sandwiched between Peru and Colombia. It is divided between the fertile Pacific coastal plain, the breathtaking Andes mountains, and the dense Amazon rain forest. Most of the people farm the land for a living. Major economic products are oil, coffee, and bananas.

Ecuador has suffered a long history of political instability since independence from Spain in 1830. However, the last twenty years have seen major improvements as the many Amerindians have been liberated and the government has changed democratically..

Although Ecuador has religious freedom, the Catholic Church remains culturally dominant, making many people unreceptive to change.
