For more information see the Fiji profile.

The Sovereign Democratic Republic of Fiji, located in the Pacific Ocean east of Australia, consists of two larger and 110 smaller inhabited islands. The islands are mountainous, and volcanic, with tropical rainforest and grasslands.

There are intense ethnic confrontations between the indigenous Fijians and immigrant indians. The end of British rule in 1970, and the end of balance of the two main peoples brought about military coups, resulting in the 1992 constitution guaranteeing perpetual Fijian political dominance.

Fijians embraced Christianity over a century ago, but this is often cultural rather than spiritual. Being 80% Hindu, the indians form the largest non-Christian community in the Pacific.
