Gambia
For more information see the Gambia profile.
The Republic of the Gambia (a narrow enclave within Senegal), is the smallest state in black Africa. Located on the banks of the river Gambia, it is flanked by low hills. Independent from Britain since 1965, Gambia is now a multi-party democracy, but with the ruling party virtually unchallenged.
There are over 25 ethnic groups that are very intermingled, the key people being the Mandingo. Converts from Islam have been few, but their numbers are increasing. Islam dominates the country with 95.4% of the population claiming to be Muslim. However, the land remains open for the gospel. Christian missionaries are restricted to development programs, but they do have considerable freedom to share their faith.
