Hungary
For more information see the Hungary profile.
Hungary is a landlocked country located in central Europe. The land is mostly
flat with a few low mountains in the north and west. The Danube River divides
Hungary from east to west. The chief natural resource is fertile soil.
Hungary was once part of the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire, but after losing
World War I lost most of its land. A Soviet-orchestrated coup brought the
Communist Party to power in 1947. In 1956 the Hungarians sought to establish
a more democratic government, but Soviet tanks crushed the revolt, and
thousands were killed. In 1990, the nation abandoned Communism and democratically
elected a new government. Hungary has religious freedom, but evangelicals
are a small minority and the larger denominations are stagnant and scarred
by Communism.
