Liberia
For more information see the Liberia profile.
The Republic of Liberia is a heavily forested coastal state in West
Africa adjoining Sierra Leone, Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire. The
American Colonization Society purchased the area in the first
half of the 19th century as a settlement for freed
slaves from the southern United States. For the next 160
years their descendants were the leaders of the nation.
Their rule ended with a coup in
1980. An unstable military government, massive corruption and
repression followed, bringing a revolution in 1989. War engulfed
the country, with countless inter-tribal killings. Presently,
three armies contend for power. Though founded as a
Christian state, there are numerous indigenous peoples
which do not yet have a viable church planting movement.
