The Unreached Peoples Prayer Profiles
Macedonia
For more information see the Macedonia profile.
Macedonia is a landlocked state bounded by Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece and
Albania. Once part of Yugoslavia, it is the poorest of the former Yugoslav
republics. As a melting pot of many peoples Macedonia is subject to
territorial claims by all its neighbors. Its declaration of independence
in 1992 was vigorously contested externally and also internally by its
restive and politically marginalized Albanian minority. Macedonia is at
present a multi-party democracy, but with the old Communist
leaders still retaining control. The Macedonian Orthodox Church
has strong influence, but is spiritually weak and steeped in
tradition. The Church vigorously opposes any evangelical or evangelistic
ministry. The evangelical witness is very small, and the
unreached are numerous.
