Mayotte
For more information see the Mayotte profile.
The Territorial Collectivity of Mayotte is a French ruled island territory
located off the eastern African coast. It consists of one large island
(Mayotte) and several smaller islands. Though natural resources and
exportable commodities are limited, Mayotte is more prosperous
than the rest of the Comoros Islands through French aid and a French
military base. Unlike the other islands in the Comoros group, which became
independent in 1975, Mayotte chose to remain a French overseas territory.
French rule is challenged by the Comorian government, but neither
the locals nor the French have shown much enthusiasm for change.
Mayotte has freedom of religion, and though 96.9% of the
population is Muslim, mosque attendance is low. Direct evangelism
is permitted, though not necessarily well received.
