The Philippines
For more information see the Philippines profile.
The Republic of the Philippines is a country on an archipelago of
more than 7,000 islands, west of the Pacific Ocean and south of
the Chinese mainland. The islands were a Spanish colony until 1898, then
were ruled by the United States until 1946. This was followed by martial
law to combat Communism, a failed one-party republic, coups, guerilla
wars, and widespread poverty. The presidential election in 1992 was the
first democratic change of government in 26 years. The Philippines has
religious freedom, and is Asia's only country with a Catholic majority.
With the election of a Protestant president, the Roman Catholic church
faces the, possible end of its privileged position.
