Papua New Guinea occupies half of the island of New Guinea. It is covered by
lofty mountains and dense rain forests. The country has the world's most
ethnically and linguistically diverse population. Over 1,000 people groups
speak over 850 languages. Papua New Guinea has a wisely administered,
steadily growing economy based on agriculture, mining, and limited manufacturing.
Papua New Guinea became independent from Australia in 1975. It is part
of the British Commonwealth and recognizes the British monarch as head of
state. The nation is governed by a democratic parliamentary system. Over
the last century, Papua New Guinea has experienced massive movements to
Christ. The nation has total freedom of religion and is permeated by
Christian values.
