Togo
For more information see the Togo profile.
Togo is a long, narrow land located on the
Atlantic coast of West Africa. It is bordered by Ghana, Burkina Faso and
Benin. The agricultural and phosphate based economy is growing moderately.
Togo became independent from France in 1960. Since 1991, the nation has
suffered much political turmoil, which has degenerated into
intense armed conflict, especially in the central and southern regions.
After a period of anti-Christian sentiment in the 1970's, Togo has
progressively granted more and more religious freedom. Bondage to
traditional religions and the steady growth of Islam are both hindrances to
the spread of the Gospel, but the church continues to grow at nearly twice
the population growth rate.
