Uganda
For more information see the Uganda profile.
Uganda is a small nation is East-central Africa. With fertile and well-
watered land, Uganda is known as the "Pearl of Africa". The economy is
dependent on the export of coffee. Uganda gained independence from Great
Britain in 1962. Tribal warfare caused a state of near anarchy until Idi
Amin seized power in 1971. Amin's crazed dictatorship destroyed Uganda's
economy and social fabric, and up to two million Ugandans died during his
reign of terror. Though the nation now has a democratic government, it still
must grapple with a growing AIDS epidemic, with more than 30% of the popul
ation now infected with the deadly virus. Uganda suffered intense
religious persecution during Amin's dictatorship, but there is now religious
freedom. Professing Christians comprise the overwhelming majority of the
population. Even so, Uganda has undergone total moral decay.
