Zimbabwe
For more information see the Zimbabwe profile.
Zimbabwe is a landlocked southern African nation located mostly on a high
plateau. The nation has a diversified economy with mining, agriculture, and
industry all contributing to foreign earnings. In recent years the economy
has suffered as a result of drought, rapid population growth, and
mismanagement. Zimbabwe became independent from Great Britain in 1965.
Until 1979 the white minority ruled over the black majority, but guerilla
warfare and increasing international pressure led to the establishment of a
majority black government in 1980. Zimbabwe has religious freedom. Though
most of the people claim to be Christians, animism retains a large following
and much influence. In addition, cults are growing rapidly.
