The Unreached Peoples Prayer Profiles
Bhutan
For more information see the Bhutan profile.
The Kingdom of Bhutan occupies the southern slopes of the eastern Himalayas; cut by valleys formed by tributaries of the Brahmaputra River, with thick forests in the south.
Bhutan was tightly closed to any Christian witness until 1965. After a very slight relaxation, increased success in soul-winning by a few Christians has brought renewed restrictions. The state religion is Buddhism, and all public worship, evangelism and proselytization by any other religion is illegal.
While missions have been welcomed to operate leprosy hospitals and be involved in health, agricultural and educational programs, it is only on the condition that they do not proselytize. Bhutan remains one of the most isolated and hidden places of the modern world.
