Malaysia
For more information see the Malaysia profile.
Malaysia is a Southeast Asian nation consisting of two parts: Peninsular
Malaysia (PM) on the Kra Peninsula, below Thailand; and East Malaysia (EM),
which consists of the territories of Sabah and Sarawak on the northern third
the island of Borneo.
Peninsular Malaysia became independent from the
United Kingdom in 1957 under the name of Malaya. Sabah and Sarawak joined
in 1963 to form Malaysia, a federation of 13 states with a constitutional
monarchy.
Sunni Islam is the official and favored religion in PM, and there
is pressure to apply the same in EM. Constitutional guarantees of religious
freedom are under attack, as it is illegal to proselytize Muslims, while
Muslims may convert whoever they like.
